Personality:

Principled | Independent | Compassionate | Elegant | Petty | Insecure | Impatient | Selfish

Maria is reasonably rational when it comes to assessing situations or people. She sees the war logically--albeit that she may not agree with it wholeheartedly. She believes the Kingdoms are in their ethical right to disagree and doesn’t consider Hoshidans to be bad people even if the latter may say otherwise about her. War is just an unfortunate bi product of disagreements. Although these are thoughts she keeps to herself. Maria is fairly independent when it comes to dealing with personal matters. She only had herself to rely on most of her life so now it just comes natural to her. Making herself the woman she is today she’s rather stubborn about not relying on others for help even if her motives say otherwise. Being raised by kindhearted people their kindness rubbed off on Maria. As much as she feels bitter about her childhood she doesn’t hold it against people as a whole, as much as she’d like to, instead treating them with kindness and love. She’s fairly understanding of others troubles and tries to be supportive of others often encouraging them to follow what they love. Maria is rather dignified and has an overall calm demeanor to her. Most think she’s unapproachable despite her friendly smile. She takes pride in hardly losing her composure. It goes so far to how she moves in trying to be as graceful and proper as she can, without any unnecessary movement.

When Maria loses her temper she can be rather immature and childish. To her horror that her behavior seems unreasonable in a normal state of mind, when she’s angered she loses most of her manners and logical thinking so. She can be super petty and hold grudges. Sometimes she will purposely mess something up for someone, not on the battlefield of course, or strive to prove herself better than the offender to make sure they would never forget the offense of crossing her. As much as Maria has tried to love herself, she struggles with a lot of self-hate. She fakes her confidence and positivity towards herself and neglects herself emotionally due to her anxiety. Battles with depression and the idea that she will be tossed aside once she is of no use again and won’t feel the warmth of love. Maria can be fairly impatient as much as she tries to keep herself level headed. Little mistakes will irritate her, or if she’s kept waiting she’s honestly offended. She’s ashamed of her behavior but not enough to do something about it. Maria tries her best to love others, as much as she’s compassionate and loving she can be selfish. It makes her feel disgusting to care about herself at times but she has to if it boils down to it. After everything is stripped away you only have yourself to depend on. Her childhood taught her that.

Once you know her:

Goofy | Energetic | Loud| Vulgar | Determined

Maria keeps her normal personality hidden from anyone unless they are close enough for comfort. More so that she feels that she can’t be loved for who she really is as she fears abandonment. It’s not to say that her adapted personality hasn’t become a part of her now but it does get tiring to ignore who she really is. Maria just finds that this particular part of herself wouldn’t suit in achieving her goal.

Overall Maria is an eccentric person. She can be quite bubbly and silly. Harmless pranks and silly jokes bring her joy. Despite her limited movement the woman is very lively and playful. She enjoys spontaneous people and activities and apt to do whatever she wanted as a child. The woman has since ceased doing things she liked as most weren’t proper for her image. Maria is noisy in all honestly. At least when she’s comfortable. It comes as a surprise to most as she’s normally soft spoken and polite. If she’s comfortable, Maria is very vocal even if it’s a positive or negative response. Let’s be honest here. Maria grew up in a small country family town. Mostly everyone knew each other and joked at the town’s tavern. She picked up many obscene words in her vocabulary. Curses like a sailor, especially when drunk. It’s no secret that Maria is very determined in everything that she does. She’s downright stubborn when it comes to it to the point about being unreasonable. She’s very passionate about what she does and her goals and would even become a detriment to herself if it meant achieving what she wanted. Maria tends to forget about her wellbeing and her ability to recognize herself as a person in favor of helping the majority over herself.

Likes:

· Valiant fighters- Anyone that protects her in battle she gets smitten over like a lovesick puppy. Only temporary as most don’t reciprocate her feelings.

· Hearty meals- She tries to eat dainty but the light food isn’t cutting it. A red meat kinda gal.

· Flowers- Specifically magnolias.

· Sewing

· Idle time

· Giving complements- She’s genuine about them she thinks everyone, man or beast, is truly wonderful and beautiful despite how they look or act. She loves to see people happy even if she’s not at peace with herself at times.

· Any attention

· Easily flustered people- finds them adorable in all honesty.

· Teasing- knows it’s unladylike but people’s reactions are soo cute.

· Shitty jokes- the worse the funnier she finds it.

· Drinking hard liquor

Dislikes:

· Gossip

· Fire

· Unnecessary violence- You’re only causing more strife to others in this war. You won’t earn any brownie points with Maria.

· Hard labor- it makes her feel useless that she can't physically participate. She truly wants to help but…

· Feeling useless

· Faking who she is- It gets super exhausting and causes her a bit of depression.

· Bitter or sour foods

· Tea- She tried to like it for the sake of being classy. It’s too mild for her tastes.

· Blood- Stains her clothes and the smell is ghastly.

History:

Maria grew up in an orphanage since she could ever remember. She remembered the cramped spaces and children fighting with one another as she remained quiet and in her own bubble. Still she was bullied by young children for being broken and not being able to be adopted while the others bragged about their chances. She had been born with a muscular disease that limited her ability to walk and often left her in pain. The child had accepted she was unwanted and watched as others came and went. The tiny girl never felt she had to prove herself to anyone so she never practiced a trade to show herself to possible parents. Many considered her dull and uninteresting and that’s what she believed most of her childhood.

An elderly couple took an interest in her after years of the child giving up on a family, Tailors from a small country town. The couple could never have kids, and they wanted a child to pass their family business too. Since she had no obvious talents, the couple viewed her as a blank slate, ready to absorb knowledge, rather than a burden.

For years, the girl remained reserved and quiet, skeptical of her new parents’ affection towards her. It was odd and foreign. It made her feel warm and sad with its absence, and it scared her she was beginning to develop a dependency. Maria was content with living without nothing. Scared and apprehensive of the new feeling, little Maria followed her parents quietly while they did their daily chores often watching them sew. It was a comfort she found that someone could put so much love into something and in return get something wonderful. The girl wondered if she could be like their love and turn into something beautiful too.

Maria began to devote herself eagerly to what she knew she could do to help, sew. Or rather she tried. She often failed, ruined fabrics or clothes and cried for hours until she couldn’t anymore. Picking herself up again with the encouragement of her parents, she tried again and again each time failing a little less and gaining confidence and skill. With a newfound passion for sewing, emotions previously locked away flooded in. With her family, it wasn’t just sadness or anger; beautiful things came out of it. Laughter, joy, love, warmth. She wanted to experience it all. The teen began to love herself despite what others thought realizing that they were wrong. Maria was wonderful, alive and wanted. It’s all she wanted as a child but never thought she had.

The war was something always put out of her mind as a child, people would be enlisted or willingly join the army. With her legs she came to the startling realization she may not have a chance to protect her parents. Traditional weapons wouldn’t do with her disability so she resorted to, magic. The local healer threw a staff and fire tome at her and told her to figure it out herself before going to war. Without a teacher, Maria practiced in between jobs with her staff and tome. She became proficient with a staff but liked the idea of creating magic and favored tomes. Practicing alone without a supervisor was fine for a while and she idolized mages and tried to do flashy tricks with her fire magic with disastrous results. She burned a good portion of her upper body leaving her traumatized by the experience. She hid her tome away never to touch it again and focused on healing magic instead. She told herself running around on foot as a mage would have been troublesome anyways.

It came sudden and took over within a week. Illness. Not the one that she cursed day and night as a child but one standard staves wouldn’t cure. It took one parent to bed than another. She watched them wither and die. The light in their eyes faded, but their smile remained. Wailing and cursing she begged them futilely not to leave her alone. With a tearful smile and a blessing on their child they left and were buried. Her parents’ warmth had gone. The staff couldn’t mend a broken heart.

Collecting herself the girl tried to find another purpose to desperately hold onto to give her life meaning. She focused on the place she was abandoned. The run down orphanage that was in even dire shape now due to the war, leaving them underfunded and children without parents. The children deserved a better life than they were dealt by fate. Maria needed money, more money than she was making as a tailor. Using her skills as a tailor she made clothes befitting of a noblewoman. The young woman practiced carrying herself, taught herself etiquette and manners befitting of an educated woman. Her end goal was to impress and marry a nobleman (or lady) and use their social standing and money to help her town’s orphanage. Love mattered to her sure, but she would ignore it for the sake of the children. No one would marry a country girl. She had to keep who she was under lock and key, being a staple prim and proper lady. Her feelings didn’t matter if it gave her a reason to have meaning in the vast world.

Soon another round of enlistments came, and she jumped at the chance to get out of her town and to meet a noble in the kingdoms army. Sure she had a use as a healer, and her skills weren’t nothing to be laughed at, but her goal wasn’t to her country but herself. Was that so selfish of her?

To this day, she is unsure if her biological parents are alive or dead or what social standing she was previously. No matter the Kingdom she was born in she remains a steadfast Nohrian.

“Why cry? You’re alive, wonderful, strong and amazing. Don’t let no one tell you; you aren’t worthy of love. I will protect your glass heart like none did for me.”

Extras:
· Often covers her mouth when she smiles or laughs. She snorts when she laughs which she finds utterly embarrassing.

· She attempts to cook and learn an instrument to appear classier. It’s mainly resulted in charred food, a destroyed kitchen and sour music. She tries okay?

· Absolutely terrified of fire. She’s not blind in her right eye, she’s covering the burns on her face (and shoulders) she earned as a mishap from no guidance in magic as a child. Seeing fire on the battlefield (be it enemy or ally) causes her to panic until she collects herself. Is hoping to get over this fear to not be a detriment to her allies.

· Actually has a country accent from her little hometown. Hides it by barely speaking, or if necessary speaking slowly. It comes out when she loses her composure. Finds her accent terribly unladylike.

·Along with her cane, she has leg braces to assist her with walking. Finds them unsightly as much as she tires dressing them up so she often wears long skirts to hide them when possible. Rides side saddle as her legs aren’t strong enough to ride a horse normally.

· Her horse acts like her service animal and emotional companion. Unfortunately for anyone other than Maria, the horse is the absolute devil.

· Gets extremely offended when anyone refuses to let her heal them out of pride. It’s the one thing she knows how to do after all. Will also give booboo kisses to embarrass others.

· A heavy drinker surprisingly. Could outdrink most of the men in her town as a stubborn effort to prove herself. Can handle hard liquor extremely well and it’s not recommended to hold contests against her.

· Picks flowers before battle to put into her bonnet and brings vials of smelling salts or perfumes with her to not reek of blood or sweat. Smells the most pleasant in the army.

· As a former tailor Maria is incredibly crafty with her hands and can use both easily for any task. Her specialty is sewing and takes pride that no one can notice her stitches when patching up the soldiers torn clothes.

· As a coping mechanism for the harsh reality of war, Maria has become overly positive as of late. She tries to find the best of a situation no matter what hand she is dealt. It’s to the point that she appears absent-minded or carefree what’s going around her.
